My Sanyo alarm clock radio finally gave up after more than 40 years (!) of loyal service so I thought about using my iPhone in StandBy mode as a replacement.
I made a first simple version in beech, without any wireless charging.
A first version of an iPhone standby dock in beech.
Worked well but got annoyed real quick plugging in the charger every night.
Quick prototype of new version permalink First made a quick prototype in pine to see how I could incorporate a wireless charger.
Quick and very dirty but I got an idea on how to fit in the charger.
It will come as no suprise that I still have some walnut offcuts left so this had to be made in walnut.
Glued together some leftovers and made an angled cut on one side. In hindsight, I should've made this cut more angled still.
I traced the shape of my iPhone so I knew where to cut the reliefs for the camera protrusion and wireless charger.
Drilled out some of the material and then used a router for the rest.
I first routed out the deepest parts.
Then I routed out the relief for the iPhone itself.
Some sanding, rounding over and some black paint to hide all the badly routed out reliefs.
